Position Overview:

Seeking an IT professional to provide network services, including troubleshooting, monitoring, engineering, and cabling for the department. The role involves designing, implementing, and optimizing network solutions, managing vendor relationships, and ensuring network performance meets standards and best practices.

**Travel may include some overnights, with notice
**Candidate must be able to pay for room/board while travelling - to be reimbursed by VDOT
**Gas card provided for gas only

Required Skills:
  • 5 Years of experience in data and telecommunications, including installing, testing, and inspecting deployed communications systems.

  • 5 Years of experience in installation, maintenance, and support of critical, multi-site networks.

  • 5 Years of experience in wire-line and wireless technologies, including fiber optics, T1, DS-3, MPLS, cellular technologies, CDMA, TDMA, VoIP, 5G, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, and IP networks.

  • 1 Year of experience testing copper and fiber.


Preferred Skills:
  • 2 Years working knowledge of networking tools, such as Fluke Versiv with light meter, netAlly AirCheck G3, netAlly nXG, iperf3, nmap, Wireshark, and traceroute.

  • 1 Year of experience with intermediate skills in Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio.

Duties:
  • Troubleshoot and monitor network performance, ensuring optimal system functionality.

  • Provide engineering support for network services, including cabling for data and voice systems.

  • Evaluate network performance and optimize system efficiency for the Information Technology department.

  • Design, direct, review, implement, and improve network and voice solutions.

  • Work with vendors to develop and implement network solutions, policies, and guidelines.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve major and minor network failures, ensuring minimal downtime.

  • Analyze network capacity and manage vendor relationships, support agreements, and network billing.

  • Install, test, and inspect data communications systems, including large-scale network installations.

  • Coordinate with multiple vendors to diagnose and resolve networking issues.

  • Stay updated on wireline and wireless communications technologies and standards, including fiber optics, MPLS, 5G, VoIP, TCP/IP, and IP networking concepts.

  • Manage all phases of network installation and administration, researching and documenting communication technologies and trends.

  • Communicate effectively with both internal and external customers, both verbally and in writing.

  • Utilize MS Teams, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiently in daily tasks.

  • Apply a strong working knowledge of LAN, WAN, WAP, Cradle Point/NetCloud, and cabling standards.

  • Travel statewide and occasionally stay overnight to perform work as required.
